“Then King Nebuchadnezzar leaped to his feet in amazement and asked his advisers, “Weren’t there three men that we tied up and threw into the fire?” They replied, “Certainly, Your Majesty.” He said, “Look! I see four men walking around in the fire, unbound and unharmed, and the fourth looks like a son of the gods.” (Daniel 3:24-25)
One of my favorite Bible stories growing up was about these three guys Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. I was just so in awe of how these three people were willing to be thrown into a fiery furnace for their faith in God. They never wavered in their faith, and because of this it was revealed to them that they were not alone in that fire; for God was with them and protected them from the death and destruction that fire should have caused.
Recently I have been going through what feels like a fire in my life. Over the past six months or so I have been hit with disappointment, rejection, sadness, anger, and loneliness. I have felt like my life has been turned upside down from what I have known. I have even wondered if God even cared what I was going through. I had been crying out to God for answers, but it didn’t feel like He was listening. Then one day while listening to some music with my daughter on the way home from swim practice, the lyrics from that song hit me deep in my soul.
“There'll be another in the fire, Standing next to me, There'll be another in the waters, Holding back the seas, And should I ever need reminding, How good You've been to me, I'll count the joy come every battle, 'Cause I know that's where You'll be” (Another In The Fire by Hillsong United)
After hearing these words and letting them penetrate my soul, my thinking shifted about the fire I I am going through. I came to the realization that God hadn’t abandoned me, and that He was right there beside me in this fire. For God promised that He would never leave us nor forsake us, and that means when we are faced with storms, battles, or fires in our lives that we are not alone. Our God loves us too much to let this world try and take us down. “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16) When you have God on your side you are never alone in the fire. You see God could be using this fire to refine, reshape, and redirect my life.
Lord as we face the fires in life please let us be reminded that we are not alone, and that you are right there beside us. May we see this fire as the way that you are refining us into who it is that You would have us to be. Thank you, Lord, for loving us so much that we don’t have to face this world alone. In Jesus name, Amen
